Do you believe in luck?
Jim Collins, in “Great by Choice” cites that we ALL experience luck – both good and bad. In fact he and his team did extensive research on a variety of companies to see if any received more good luck, more bad luck, if their success was because of early luck or if they had luck spikes. It was pretty much the same across the board. Everyone seemed to have the same amount of all kinds of luck.
His question then became, “What return to do you get on your luck?”
If you understand that there is an element of risk in all undertakings (like “living” for instance) and you get in shape to prepare yourself for some bad luck – car breakdown, negative economy, health setback – you’ll find a way to get through it.
If you focus on preparing yourself for when good luck bestows itself – carrying business cards, having a camera ready, packing the little black dress – then you’ll maximize opportunity.
Not expecting luck of any kind means reacting to life’s circumstances; not being ready for the good stuff and feeling victimized by the bad.
There are, at any given time, so many moving parts to your life, but allowing luck or chance or random outcomes to control you means you are giving away your power.
Aha – you are not imprisoned by your circumstances
Depending on your state of mind, level of confidence, number of supporters, assessment of security, etc., your response to your luck will take a direction.
And that direction can be directly proportionate to how ready you are to handle the luck
Worse than not being prepared is beating yourself up for not being prepared and missing the lesson.
“Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it, work with it not against it.” Eckhart Tolle
When you accept luck as if you had chosen it, you’re back in control of your response – your power – and deal with luck responsibly.
It’s not about the gifts life bestows on you or the unfairness it sometimes plays.
It’s always about your response to the luck.
Let the operative word be “acceptance”.
