Aha Moment Monday
There is always this delicate balance to our work between what needs to be done for today and what needs to be done for tomorrow.
For instance, your town council would make road construction decisions based on routing day-to-day traffic in the upset of the dig while paving the way for tomorrow’s commuters.
Your wellness trainer would give you a routine that would provide you with energy today while preparing you to laugh in the face of tomorrow’s aging.
The lessons you’re instilling in your kids now will keep them safe today and will empower them for tomorrow’s stability.
So what’s the split in focus and effort for today vs. tomorrow?
Many days it takes considerable effort just to keep a multitude of balls in the air where even setting aside “thinking time” about tomorrow can be too much to ask.
But here’s food for thought. We’ve witnessed technology making a number of jobs redundant and we know the trend will inevitably continue. For instance, with the advent of self-driving cars, two to three million Americans are projected to lose their jobs in the coming decade.
Now, many great leaders suggest that the best preparation for tomorrow is to do today’s work really well.
Is that advice complete?
I’m wondering, where is the balance of time with school bus, truck and taxi drivers?
While they’re likely invested in enhancing their driving skills for today, are they in tune with the needs of tomorrow?
Aha – “Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming”. ~David Bowie
Tony Robbins asks, “How am I going to live today in order to create the tomorrow I’m committed to?”
That question invites you to project yourself into the future as well as to envision what that future will actually look like!
Being exceptional at what you do by committing to mastery is only one side of the lucky penny.
The other side is to be relevant.
To own both you need to be listening.
“Life is always speaking to you. First in whispers…. It’s subtle, those whispers. And if you don’t pay attention to the whispers, it gets louder and louder. It’s like getting thumped upside the head, like my grandmother used to do…. You don’t pay attention to that, it’s like getting a brick upside your head. You don’t pay attention to that, the whole brick wall falls down. Your life is speaking to you. What is it saying?” ~ Oprah Winfrey
