Can you eat just one potato chip?
Or could you seriously make a meal out of ripple chips with sour cream and onion dip?
How about BBQ chips at the cottage or salt and vinegar at the baseball game?
Now before you run to the snack cupboard, the operative word in my first question was “one”.
Do you have the discipline to eat just one potato chip?
“The word discipline means to impart knowledge and skill – to teach. However, it is often equated with punishment and control.” writes the Canadian Paediatric Society in a post entitled, “Effective Discipline for Children.” They continue that, discipline given by a parent (I’ll add, “or person of influence”) should be, “…self-enhancing, i.e., ultimately leading to self-discipline.”
“Self-enhancing” sounds so kind and empowering but all too often discipline is not delivered in a caring, or perceived caring, manner.
So does the sound of the word “discipline” make you feel like you’re conforming or behaving out of your own true character?
What if your disciplines align with your goals?
Aha – “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment” ~ Jim Rohn
You see discipline isn’t something you impose or sacrifice to make your parents – or boss, or bank, or coach – happy. It’s an agreement you have with yourself that totally and enormously amplifies your personal power and keeps you on purpose.
Pull out that goal sheet that you drafted on January 1st.
Is there a discipline you can decide on that would get you there with assurance?
No one said it was going to be easy, but it’s always worth it.
By the way, my new favourite snack is Luke’s organic sweet potato, buckwheat and hemp variety with hummus.
I decided I can have my chips and eat them, too.
