Aha! Moment Monday
Benjamin Franklin said, “Time is money”. Does that imply they’re equal in value?
If your time is worth, say $100 per hour and you spend, on average, an hour a week “chasing” or “undoing” or “waiting” – like when you’re placed on a long hold to speak with a government agent OR you receive an incorrect shipment and you have to double back to get what you ordered OR you’re directed to a counter-intuitive website to conduct business – that would equate to $5200 a year! What a waste!
Let’s face it: time is a currency however we can’t earn or bank time like we can money so when we say ‘time is money’, to what proportion? Are they interchangeable currencies?
Aha! ~ You can always make more money but you can never make more time
“Time is free but it’s priceless. You can’t own it but you can use it. You can’t keep it but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.” ~ Harvey Mackay
When you trade time for money, in other words equate a specific value to each measurement of time and assign it a specific measurement of financial value, you’ve only just scratched the surface of the enormous value time can bring.
Let’s shift gears and change up the word “spend” for “invest”. You can spend 90 minutes attending a networking event and that investment could yield a new client worth $100,000.00. You can spend money on education, awareness or training an investment that would yield several times the success you could achieve without the knowledge. You can spend time with your 15-year-old who has a “whatever” attitude but that investment of your love and undivided attention could reveal clues to building a stronger relationship.
“Time is a made up thing. To say, ‘I don’t have time’, is like saying, ‘I don’t want to”. ~ Lao Tzu
Time doesn’t equal money. Time is in a league by itself and you get to choose how you use it.
